The days listed are when the alumna/us is available to have a student at her/his workplace. If you would like to apply for an experience but cannot attend all the days listed, please note this on your application, and we will work with your schedule.

Specialty: Pediatric Rheumatology

Dr. Pachman’s clinical and research interests center on the regulation of the immune response in children with vascular involvement and rheumatic disease. Her specific focus is the study of factors affecting the onset and course of the most common pediatric inflammatory myopathy, juvenile dermatomyositis. To this end, she has one of the largest clinics in the world for children and a team of clinicians to help children with this disorder. This focus is implemented by both a national NIH funded study of the immunogenetics and clinical profiles of Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) and several general clinical research grants to dissect out the vascular components and mechanism of inflammation in JDM.

The student will meet with members of the translational research lab and experience the organization needed to conduct translational research. The student will attend the afternoon clinic and have the opportunity to meet with a variety of patients who have been diagnosed with JDM.

Arizona Experiences

Dr. Wong will provide his assigned student with a great deal of outpatient experience, including new patients, follow-up, management of patients on treatment, participation of multidisciplinary case conferences, and radiation treatment planning. The student will also gain inpatient experience, including hospital consults, occasional procedures using intra-operative radiation therapy or brachytherapy for cancer.

Boston Area Experiences

Dr. Becker’s practice is predominantly primary care, but also 20% GI. The student will shadow Dr. Becker in the office and see a wide range of disease. The student will also shadow Dr. Becker at procedures in hospital endoscopy units.

Specialty: Financial Services (Dr. Mora functions as a technical analyst at an investment bank that specializes in health care.)

Dr. Mora’s schedule is highly variable, and thus it is difficult to predict precisely what this experience will include. His job generally revolves around reviewing literature, speaking to experts, planning conferences, and advising clients on technical issues.

California Experiences

In this unique opportunity, the student will spend the majority of the time shadowing Dr. Martin J. Fee in his office and at the hospital, but will spend one day in the office with Dr. Janis D. Fee as well. Both of the Drs. Fee are community private practitioners.

During the experience, the student will attend a deal review logistics meeting and a weekly investment review meeting. The student will meet with eight CEO/business owners for a half-day (CEO Alliance) and attend a telephonic Board of Directors meeting, as well as a portfolio company orientation by investment professionals to the deal/investment process. The student will receive an introduction to the research and reference resources Dr. Given uses.

Dr. Given will provide economical air transportation reimbursement. He will also host the student, beginning on Sunday evening and provide transportation to/from work.

Dr. Wu is the Chief of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery at St. Luke’s Hospital and also has a private practice. His practice is heavily focused on surgery of the upper extremities (with some general plastic surgery cases). The student shadowing Dr. Wu will gain exposure to life in his private practice.

Dr. Wu will host the student in his home student and provide transportation to/from work.
*The student should have had enough clinical training to understand pathology and especially anatomy. It is ideal, but not necessary, for the student to be leaning towards a surgical specialty and have some special interest in plastic surgery or hand surgery.
